Sell, Donate, and Dispose of Unwanted Furniture in Boston
Looking to freshen up your apartment living space and earn some additional square footage in the process? Make the most of your Forest Properties floorplan by saying bye-bye to old, clunky furniture and hello to a new, refreshed apartment style. Whether you’re looking to give your home a clean sweep or are preparing for an upcoming move, here’s how to lighten your load by selling, donating, or quickly disposing of unwanted furniture.
How to Sell Furniture
Planning to lighten your moving truck load or freshen up your Heights at Cape Ann apartment? Instead of giving away old furniture, why not sell it? Pieces such as dining room sets, coffee tables, and sturdy bookshelves can be expensive when buying brand new, which means there’s a demand for good quality, second-hand furniture. Here are a few ways to resell furniture and make a few bucks in the process:
- AptDeco: An online marketplace to buy and sell used furniture. Delivery services are available in exchange for a cut of the final selling price.
- Facebook Marketplace: Similar to Craigslist, the Facebook Marketplace allows Facebook users to sell furniture, TVs, and other household items within the local community.
- Local Thrift Stores and Markets: For residents of The Parkside in Boston, there’s a nice selection of consignment stores that accept used furniture. If you have a lot of furniture to sell, check out Cambridge Antique Market to set up your own little selling space!

The Best Way to Dispose of Furniture
If you’re wondering what not to pack when moving, some top-of-the-list items include old, clunky, and outdated pieces of furniture. Once you’ve decided what’s staying and what’s going, it’s important to educate yourself on how to properly throw away furniture.
The city of Boston considers couches, box springs, mattresses, headboards, bookcases, tables, TV stands, and desk as regular “trash” items. These items must be placed on the curb before 7:00am on trash collection day for pickup. For a full list of accepted items for trash disposal, contact Boston Public Works at 617-635-4900 or publicworks@boston.gov for more information.
Good To Know: If you have furniture to throw away, check with your apartment complex manager on how to do so. There may be specific rules when it comes to trash disposal, placement, and schedule pick up times you may not be aware of.
